Something is better than Nothing

Something is better than Nothing

Welcome back to the Mortgage Mindset Blog!  Only one Mortgage Term for this week: Compounding Interest.

Compounding Interest: is when interest that is not yet paid on a loan is added to the principal amount of the loan at a set period.  In Canada, every mortgage except for a Variable Rate Mortgage compounds interest semi-annually, or twice per year.

When it comes to any form of self-improvement doing something is better than nothing.  So long as you are making positive forward progress, no matter how small you are still succeeding.  In an earlier blog post, I talked about the power of small wins.  Check it out here: https://www.aarnonemortgages.com/blog/the-power-of-small-wins

This is similar to habit stacking from James Clear’s Atomic Habits, but more on a focus on the good you have achieved, rather than the system you use to achieve it.  It doesn’t matter how far you go, just that you kept going that little bit further.

Let’s put this into context.  Say for example, you typically make 5 sales calls in a day.  But for some reason you are unable to do that today.  You realize that the most you could do is make one call.  Make that one call.

I can’t remember who has this quote, but it is one of my favourites.  “All you can do is your best, and your best looks different on different days.”  Even if you’ve done something every day for a long period of time, whether its 3,6,9, months in a row, or even for years.  Just keep moving forward.  Doing something to better yourself is doing nothing.

If you’re working on improving your businesses, or your sales goals, it can be about work.  For me regardless of what I am working on, whether it is my business or self-improvement, I pick a number.  Sometimes it’s 3, sometimes it’s 5, and sometimes it’s 1.  It doesn’t matter what your number is.  Whatever you can do on that day…even if it’s only 1, do that thing.

This doesn’t mean you don’t take care of yourself.  You need to make sure that you can be at your best for the longest.  Sometimes you can’t keep going, and you simply need a day.  That’s okay.  Take your time, get back to your best.  Mental Health is crucial.  The whole point of this is to help myself, and hopefully others listen to themselves, take time to get better, and then get back to their best.
