The Power of Just Starting

The Power of Just Starting:

Hi everyone!  Welcome back to the second Mortgage Mindset Blog.  Thank you to everyone who supported the first post!

Your Three Mortgage Terms for this week are as follows:

1.     Mortgage:  Any loan secured against real property i.e., land.  This is different from a loan secured against a car, or an unsecured line of credit.

2.     Adjustable-Rate Mortgage:  An adjustable-rate mortgage is a mortgage which has its rate adjust throughout the length of the term.  This is commonly referred to as a Variable Rate Mortgage.

3.     Conventional Mortgage:  A conventional mortgage is a mortgage where the loan amount does not exceed 80% of the property value.  For example if you have a house worth $500,000 a Conventional mortgage loan would be $400,000.  Anything above the $400,000 number would be considered a High Ratio Mortgage.

Now, this week was tough.  Like many people I had a lot of stuff that I wanted to accomplish.  So naturally I was procrastinating, and listening to Ryan Holiday at the Daily Stoic Podcast, when he was talking about how difficult it is for him to accomplish the thing that he is supposed to be doing.

Starting something new can be one of the most difficult things to do.  Starting something new, that you know you are supposed to be doing can be even more difficult.  That’s why today we are talking about the power of just starting.

He was talking about the thing that you know you should be doing, whether it’s folding the laundry, sending that email, or making that sales call.  It was during a conversation with Tim Urban on his podcast where they were talking about driving across the country in this case the US from New York to California.  If you do it in 10 mile increments in the middle of it, the task will feel like it won’t matter.  You may not be able to always see your progress, even if you are progressing.

Whatever that task is that you are hoping to accomplish, just start.  If it’s oh I want to read more.  Start with one page.  This is a lesson that I first heard in the most life-changing book I have ever read, Atomic Habits by James Clear.

In this book he talks about going to the gym.  James was a highly ranked college athlete, but this lesson can apply to anything that people want to accomplish.  He mentions that if you want to go to the gym more, just say you are going to go to the gym for two minutes.

This will at least get you started, and you will likely go for longer, as who actually goes to the gym for two minutes.

Let’s apply this to sales for a second.  Let’s say you want to make 10 sales calls in a week to random people to grow your customer base.  Just make one call.  See how that goes.  Write it down on a “To Do” list with a check-mark once you’ve done it.  You will instantly feel as if you accomplished something good.

When I was a kid I never understood why my parents wanted me to make my bed in the morning.  Now as an adult I use making my bed in the morning as a gauge.  If I have made my bed in the morning then no matter what else happens in the day I at least I have done one productive thing.  One step forward is better than standing still.

So whatever it is that you are struggling with starting, whether it’s reading more, going to the gym, making that sales call, or simply folding the laundry, just start.  Break it down into small goals that you know you can achieve.

If you have a list of 100 people to call, to grow your business highlight them in different colours, in whichever interval you like.  If you can do ten but not one-hundred highlight them in blocks of ten.  If you can do five, do five.  If two, then two.  If one, then one.  It doesn’t matter so long as you start.

On the non-sales side, say you have mounds of laundry to fold.  For me this is always the hardest part of doing laundry.  I find it easy to put in the washer, and change it over to the dryer, but the I usually just dump it on my bed, and at the end of the day I just end up with a pile of (clean) clothes making a mess on my bed.

So in this scenario where we are doing the laundry, say to yourself, I will only fold my pants.  Then see how you feel once you’ve accomplished that.  Even if all you do is fold one pair of pants, that’s one less pair you’ll have to do later.

Whatever it is that you want to start doing, be it business or life related, just start.  Trust me, you will see the progress down the line, and you will thank yourself for at least doing something, no matter how small.
